Neil McAuliffe recalls his fathers stories of his times at the Elwood Sailing Club.<\/span><\/p>\n

After my father\u2019s funeral, I came across some photos that I thought\u00a0were of historical importance to your club. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dad was a member of the Elwood Sailing club for many years while he was\u00a0living in and around the bayside at addresses such as Spray St, Foam St,\u00a0and New St; in Elwood and Elsternwick. \u00a0It was the days of \u00a0the Seahorse\u00a0Class, and we believe he sailed somewhere circa 1945 to 1955, although I am\u00a0unsure of the exact dates. \u00a0My mother even remembers him\u00a0sailing off on a bay cruise (to her slight annoyance I think), when they\u00a0got engaged to be married in 1946.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span>
\nHe told me many funny stories of those times and I shall recount two of\u00a0them to you, as told by my father: <\/p>\n

It seems \u00a0that back in the 1940’s, protocol and etiquette were of great\u00a0importance to the club, and the young men were always being encouraged to\u00a0behave and dress better, especially at inter-club competitions. \u00a0My father\u00a0and some of the other young men, then only in their twenties, were\u00a0encouraged by the Commodore to ‘do better’ with their dress, at an up and\u00a0coming event. \u00a0He had told them, \u00a0‘Please at least have the decency to wear\u00a0a hat at the after-race gathering’. \u00a0The boys assured him they all would do
\ntheir best, but imagine his chagrin when they all turned up sporting a\u00a0bizarre range of headdresses including a deer-stalker, a top-hat, a cowboy\u00a0hat, a jungle pith-hat etc.<\/p>\n

On another occasion the Elwood club Commodore gave specific instructions on\u00a0what to do at a ‘sail past’, that was to culminate another up-coming event,\u00a0to be held at a neighbouring club (possibly the prestigious St.Kilda Club).\u00a0It appears that some important people were to be present on that club’s\u00a0balcony, including the wives and Commodores of several visiting clubs, and\u00a0perhaps even the local mayor. \u00a0The host Commodore was to take the salute,\u00a0and many crews from different clubs were to sail past as he did so.
\nFearing the worst, the Elwood Commodore told his young charges that he\u00a0would be in their lead boat, to follow him, and “for goodness sake, just do\u00a0what I do”. \u00a0\u00a0As the Elwood Commodore’s vessel came by the host club, with\u00a0dignitaries and wives looking down at the splendid line of Seahorse yachts\u00a0sailing by in single procession, a strong side-wind caught his crew\u00a0off-guard, and blew his yacht over. \u00a0The Commodore and his crew righted\u00a0their yacht, and continued on, stoically, but greatly embarrassed. \u00a0One by\u00a0one the mischievous young Elwood yachtsman, including my father, sailed up,\u00a0and did as their Commodore had done. \u00a0The host club’s Commodore, the\u00a0dignitaries, and guests, looked on in bemusement as the Elwood E2, E3, E4\u00a0and subsequent crews, all sailed up to the host club, and one after the\u00a0other, tipped over their yachts, righted them again, and sailed on, just as\u00a0their Commodore had asked them to do.
\n\"\"As Dad got older he stopped sailing, and joined the Elwood Bowling club\u00a0which was somewhere behind the ESC, as it perhaps still is. \u00a0Dad bowled on\u00a0until well into his late seventies. \u00a0He was a club champion and life member\u00a0of Trentham Bowling Club in the Central Highlands, for 18 years, where he\u00a0also served as Club Treasurer and Secretary for much of that time. \u00a0As you\u00a0may know, each set of woods owned by a bowler has a distinctive emblem in\u00a0the centre of each bowl, to identify that set from from those of the\u00a0opposition. \u00a0In those days, most people wanting a new set of bowls would\u00a0look through the manufacturer’s catalogue to choose an emblem that took\u00a0their fancy, prior to the bowls being made. \u00a0In his early days at Elwood\u00a0Bowling Club, Dad wanted something different, so he comissioned a personal\u00a0set of bowls to be made with the Elwood Sailing Club’s seahorse emblem to\u00a0be in the centre of each wood. \u00a0The manufacturer had no such die to press\u00a0that exact image into the bowl, so Dad provided them with the Elwood\u00a0design, and a new die was made at extra cost especially for the purpose.\u00a0He always bowled with that special set of “Seahorse” bowls that no-one else\u00a0had. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Many years later while bowling while on holiday in QLD, he came\u00a0across another man who was bowling with that exact Elwood Seahorse design\u00a0on his own set of bowls. \u00a0Dad asked him where he got them. \u00a0He was told\u00a0that they were made in Victoria, and that he saw the design in the
\nmanufacturer’s catalogue and thought it looked good. \u00a0So the ESC Seahorse\u00a0still rolls-on, not only on flags at sea, but also on land (compliments of\u00a0my father, Maurice McAuliffe) perhaps on a remote bowling green somewhere\u00a0in Australia today.<\/p>\n

I have attached a photo of my father in his younger days, and two snapshots\u00a0of some Seahorse yachts (circa late 1940’s) taken outside the ESC. I hope\u00a0they are of interest to you. \u00a0I think the Seahorse photos would make a good\u00a0addition to the existing ones on the Club History page of your website .<\/p>\n
